This is inflammation (swelling and redness) of the bronchi that causes a persistent cough. People with bronchitis make lots of sputum/mucus. They often have a fever and chest pain, too. Bronchitis is often caused by respiratory infections (viruses or bacteria) or irritants in the air such as tobacco smoke.
