Glossary -   Insulin

This is a hormone (a chemical messenger that travels through the blood) made by the pancreas. It is made in the pancreas and secreted into blood when the sugar level in the blood becomes high after a meal. Insulin causes muscle, liver and fat cells to allow sugar inside to be used as energy or to store for later. Insulin lowers the blood sugar back to normal (100 mg/dL) until the next meal. A person whose pancreas cannot make insulin has Type 1 diabetes.
